Awesome Adolescence

Warning: Teens at Risk

New Models for Prevention and Intervention

Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, 2004

The Marriott at Copley Place, Boston

Course Description

Adolescence is a time of significant development offering great opportunities for growth along with daunting challenges for adolescents and their families, as well as the mental health care clinicians, healthcare practitioners, teachers, and mentors who interact with them. Today, many teens are at risk.

McLean Hospital is proud to offer this exciting continuing education program, covering cutting edge, state-of-the-art research and clinical intervention data across a wide spectrum of adolescent risk and opportunity. We will cover biological/brain research, self-esteem interventions, mind-body interactions, the scourge of violence and depression, and new models for intervention, as well as new approaches for understanding normal sexuality, eating disorders, and the central developmental factors in psychological and psychiatric treatment of adolescent dysfunction. From safe schools to disease appropriate medication; from resiliency factors to brain development, practitioners will receive the most salient information necessary to successfully intervene with teens at risk and forestall risk to teens struggling with the normative dangers in our 21 st century culture.

Objectives

  • Participants will learn about the development of boys and girls.
  • Participants will explore various forms of adolescent psychopathology.
  • Participants will learn to understand and address violence and suicide among adolescents.
  • Participants will better understand the challenges confronting adolescents in schools and among their peers.
