McLean celebrates its Bicentennial and honors Mariel Hemingway

On November 19, 2011, McLean Hospital honored internationally known actress, author, speaker and wellness expert Mariel Hemingway at the hospital's 200th anniversary gala held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston. Mariel, the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, received the McLean Award – the hospital's highest honor – for her commitment to serving as an advocate for mental health causes including depression, eating disorders and suicide prevention.

In Mariel's illustrious family, seven relatives took their lives, including her older sister Margaux. A compassionate voice for those suffering from psychiatric illness and the stigma around it, Mariel has teamed with Academy Award-winning producer and director Barbara Kopple and the Oprah Winfrey Network to create a documentary, offering a rare perspective into the lives of a family that has fascinated America and the world for generations.

By sharing her story, Mariel encouraged the large turnout of supporters to participate in eliminating the stigma of mental illness. The gala marked McLean's progress over two centuries and expressed the hope for an exciting future.
