Needs Your Support TODAY!
December 13, 2001 -- Please call, email or fax your U.S. Congressman today, urging him to accept legislation that would end insurance discrimination against individuals with psychiatric illnesses. The U.S. Senate has passed the legislation. The bill now rests with the House of Representatives. Your voice is needed to urge House leaders to accept the Senate version of the bill. Suggested wording is below.
To reach your U.S. Congressman, call 1-866-PARITY4 (1-866-727-4894), which will connect you to the Capitol switchboard (a free call). Once connected, ask for your representative by name or give the operator your zip code and you will be connected directly to your Congressman's office. You may also contact your U.S. Congressman by logging on to: http://www.congress.org/
I am writing to thank you for your support of mental health insurance parity and to ask you to encourage your fellow House leaders to accept the Senate version of the Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act.
This legislation is a critical step toward providing your constituents who suffer from psychiatric illnesses the full health insurance they deserve. There is no reason to discriminate against those who have illnesses of the brain. There is no scientific or medical justification for insurance coverage of mental illness to be on different terms and conditions than other diseases, especially since the Congressional Budget Office estimates that this legislation will increase insurance premiums by less than one percent.
More than one in five Americans suffer from a psychiatric illness and need your support. On behalf of these individuals, please accept the Senate-approved Mental Health Equitable Treatment Act.
