Depression strikes more than 17 million Americans each year. Symptoms include prolonged periods of hopelessness, restlessness, irritability, changes in sleep or appetite, loss of energy and thoughts of death or suicide. The good news is that depression is successfully treated in 80 percent of diagnosed cases.

National Depression Screening Day is sponsored nationally by McLean Hospital, the American Psychiatric Association, the Screening for Mental Health, Inc., the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
